AFL Rules Should Be Changed al la Presto!

Post by Windy Hille »

SEN this afternoon discussed rule changes should just be introduced without going through extensive consultation and trial sessions in other leagues.

The gist of the convo was regarding changes to the centre “square” which used to be a diamond, but should look at changing it to other shapes that could improve congestion issues. The six, six, six has been a hit according to them, and other rules and set ups should just be introduced to see if it makes for a better spectacle.

It was an interesting discussion that had me nodding in approval. The 10 metre square could become the 25 metre square allowing for deeper kick ins, and perhaps having it as an exclusion zone except for the full forward and full back.

Enhancement of the game at all costs they say…..

I think I caught the tail end of this conversation. Were they serious? Seemed extreme and far fetched. But to some extent, they were right… the naysayers never except change and the game would never evolve if they got their way all the time.

But… you can’t just introduce changed willy nilly and just “hope for the best” that it works. That’s nonsense talk in my view.

But I didn’t hear the full conversation so I don’t know the context that led to this part I heard.

Anyway… stop fkng around with the game

Us naysayers Never get our way, because the AFL change the Rules all the time.

That's what the AFL do a lot of the time.Is it any wonder the Umps can't keep up like the fans and Supporters?

They were serious. Bounced ideas but subplanted previous rule changes that everyone deplored when they changed them, but now look back at them and say how much better the game is because of it. For exampke, the 15 metre penalty changed to a 50 metre penalty. There was uproar! But looking back at games where 15 metre penalties were handed out every 2 minutes because the offending team didn’t give a rats - minimal real estate given up for the benefit of getting players further back behind the play (time wasting ploy).

The centre diamond to a square. But now discussing a hexagonal or octagonal shape to try and spread players on certain lines at the bounce seems logical.

What they were basically saying is that new rules should just be inserted at any time, and teams just have to adjust forthwith.

They admit there were some dummy rules such as you had to take a kick from a free kick which was binned after one season. Players simply forgot and then a ball up occurred which frustrated players and fans alike.

Whether you like it or not, agree or disagree, the AFL will always be looking to refine the game to better the spectacle. People just need to accept change because the game can’t stay the same.

Better the spectacle for whom?

The AFL are always trying to impress people who really don't give a Fat Rat's clacker about Aussie Rules Footy.

The Game doesn't really need change for change's sake!

Sometimes I do wonder though.
We see how teams adapt to new rules. And we see how they adapt to new opposition tactics.
Is it conceivable, that if the rules never changed (well, except rarely for something obvious) we'd simply eventually see the game evolve on it's own to overcome the "problems"??

^^^This^^^

Rules only seem to have the intended/desired effect until the mid-season bye. Then teams learn how to game the new rule so it almost becomes redundant.

I am still keen for the ruck "nominations" to be scrapped ... as long as two players go up at the ball up, who really cares? And it speeds things up so less congestion is likely.

While we are about it, scrap the "stand" rule. It has not increased scoring and umps are still getting sucked into paying frees when the ball holder fakes a HB.

I and many others would like AWFULL House to leave the Rules the Hell Alone for a Year or 3.

But they can't and I could go on about that yet again, but not now.

It’s perpetual though. Bring in a rule, modify the rule, bring in a rule to counter the anti-rule, then add an interpretation different to the initial rule interpretation so that it appears to be a different rule, then…

Mate, why do you think Umpires struggle with the Rules?Because there are too bloody many. Those fools at AWFULL House trying to impress their mates at NFL HQ,seem to forget one thing. Our once great game is not Stop/Start like the NFL,though they sure as Hell try and make it be.Our Game does not need every stoppage to be potentially reviewed, because another new Rule demands the Umpires do so.

It needs to free flowing as often as possible, without the need for the Umpies to pull it up for the most Ridiculous Reason!

A Commonsense Body would have Our Umpires to Stick to the Basics of Holding The Ball,Without the Ball,Push in the Back, high tackle, trip and run too far with the ball.Everything else should not matter, except for any blatant stupidity that warrants a 50.

That way,the Umpires only have to worry about those Essentials and the Game has a chance to breathe again.

Ah yes, but in essence, the game is actually free flowing due to rule changes to make it do. Less ball ups, less calls for HTB with players having more time to get rid of it etc. The game is fast paced and less offisted. This brings a side effect of players getting flung or slung to the ground because they have too much time in a tackle to get rid of it. Do we go back to the days where they blow the whistle as soon as a tackler grabs a player with the ball? Less ball ups the better in my view.
