13. Essendon - Saad El-Hawli
Northern Bullants VFL
Defender
Height - 184cm
DOB 15/5/01
El-Hawli is all about speed. With an excellent turn of pace and good bounce, he has provided plenty of run and carry playing across half-back and sometimes on a wing for the Northern Bullants this season. He couldn't have done more to give recruiters something to think about last weekend, winning 33 disposals and kicking two goals playing against a host of AFL-listed players from Sydney at reserves level. It added to a VFL campaign where El-Hawli has averaged 25.8 disposals and 6.5 marks, as well as demonstrating an improved ability to get forward and hit the scoreboard. Having played as a crumbing forward throughout his junior career, there's also versatility to his game.

Names that were being thrown about as possible MSD selections, but were not selected, included:
Jack Peris - for his speed
Cam Nyko - fast outside mid
Lachlan Monteath - But for another club
Oskar Smartt - Small Forward
Richmond did however recruit Cambell Gray from the Essendon VFL. Partly because they are running short of tall backs/rucks and possibly because he is an apprentice sparky.

He seems to have a lot of upside for us, and in my opinion, especially as a smallish forward.
I've liked the look of Peris too, and wouldn't have been disappointed if we'd picked him.
Congrats to Campbell Gray also.
Since being moved forward this year he's looked pretty decent. Very raw but with big upside I think. The VFL side will miss him.

Was ok in his first outing. Moves so much like Adam Saad it’s uncanny!
Tried very hard despite the team’s shortfalls.
Did commit a massive howler and gave up an embarrassing goal. But overall, I liked what I saw.

Mid-season draftee Saad El-Hawli has wasted no time in making an impact at Essendon, impressing with 25 disposals...
A 23-year-old who has impressed off half back and a wing for the Northern Bullants this season, El-Hawli joined the Bombers' senior rookie list on Wednesday and put in a strong showing in his first outing in new colours.

It’s like whenever we recruit someone to the club, we give them a jumper presentation and a pair of f****** crutches. FFS.
