Daniher meets with Swans chief executive

Essendon full-forward Joe Daniher flew to Sydney recently to have a private meeting with Swans chief executive Tom Harley.

The lunch, which took place at a private eatery in the harbour city last week, has fuelled speculation that Daniher may seek a move away from the AFL fish bowl in Melbourne, while Sydney are looking for a long-term replacement for Lance Franklin.

Essendon were aware that the meeting was taking place and the Bombers believe the catch-up was simply between two friends, with Harley understood to be a long-term mentor of the mercurial tall forward.

It is understood that Daniher was in Sydney for a follow-up meeting with his surgeon, who is based in NSW, following an operation on his troublesome groin earlier this year.

Daniher, 25, signed a three-year contract extension with the Bombers in 2017 at close to $900,000 a season.

He has been cruelled by injury and has only played 11 games since the start of 2018.

Daniher famously chose Essendon over Sydney as a 16 year-old in 2010, when he had both clubs chasing him under the father-son rule.

Caracella returns to the Bombers
It will be a homecoming for premiership player Blake Caracella with the Essendon Football Club pleased to advise he will return to the Bombers as an assistant coach in 2020.

A vital member of the Bombers’ 2000 premiership team, the 42-year-old enjoyed a decorated career as a player that spanned 187 games at Essendon, Brisbane and Collingwood before he embarked on his coaching career.

Caracella served as an assistant coach at Collingwood in 2007, before moving to Geelong in a seven-season stint under Chris Scott, including the Cats’ 2011 premiership campaign.

In 2017, Caracella joined Richmond under former teammate and Tigers senior coach Damien Hardwick, serving as offence coach for their premiership season that year.

GM of football Dan Richardson said the club looked forward to welcoming Caracella back to the Bombers.

“We are thrilled Blake has indicated his desire to join our club next season,” Richardson said.

“We respect he is currently contracted and committed to the Richmond Football Club. We thank the Tigers for their understanding and as such, Blake will commence his role with the Bombers at the start of our 2020 pre-season campaign.”

Harley Bennell to meet with Melbourne-based club in hope of AFL comeback

Injury-plagued speedster Harley Bennell will meet with a Melbourne-based club later this month as he eyes a miraculous AFL comeback.

Bennell, 26, will undergo a second bout of surgery on his troublesome calves in a fortnight after specialists identified what they believe is the mystery problem that has cruelled his 83-game career.

Geelong injury specialist Peter Stanton and his surgeons are adamant Bennell will be fully recovered and back in training by November.

The issue that went undetected during his time at Fremantle involves a tendon pushing onto a nerve in both of Bennell’s calves.

Bennell and his manager Colin Young will meet with officials from a Victorian club in three weeks to provide an update on his mental and physical wellbeing.

The 2010 No.2 draft pick is determined to revive his AFL career away from Perth after breaking down and being cut adrift by the Dockers in June.

Relaxed player movement rules will allow clubs to offer him a pre-season without commitment and the chance to add him to the list in the new year in the same way Richmond success story Sydney Stack found his way to Punt Rd this season.

It would effectively represent a free throw at the stumps for clubs like Essendon, St Kilda and Melbourne desperately seeking outside run and polish.

Bennell played just two games for Fremantle across four seasons after shifting from the Gold Coast Suns at the end of 2015.

All clubs be sent a copy of Bennell’s medical status ahead of November’s national and pre-season drafts.

“Harley will meet with a club in the next two to three weeks to see where his mind is at and where his body is at,” a figure close to Bennell told the Herald Sun.

“He believes he can do it.”

Dockers skipper Nat Fyfe defended his club’s medical program on Sunday amid claims Fremantle players were being let down in their rehabilitation.

“If you look at our injury list compared to other AFL team injury lists, Collingwood has 17 or 18, we have nine or 10,” Fyfe told Triple M.

“I know internally our doctors and medical staff are doing everything they can.

“They look across the country, they look internationally if they have to, to try and find the best ways to rehab and bring guys back.”

WHO SHOULD LOOK AT HARLEY?

Could zero in on Fremantle pair Brad Hill and Harley Bennell as a package. The Saints need some more midfield class and are at risk of losing star onballer Jack Steven.

ESSENDON
The Bombers’ list is already in good shape but Bennell could be the cherry on top if the speedster can get his body right. Should be in top-four contention next year.

MELBOURNE
The Demons have a talented onball brigade but they have lacked poise and run on the outside. Bennell was one of the best kicks in the league before his calf dramas.

Would be irresponsible to not take a look....can only be upside. Some strict performance and behaviour clauses in his contract and see where it goes. Guys like Stringer show what a second chance with a little maturity can achieve. Honestly, and I hope this comes out in the right way, being in Perth near bad influences was probably not a smart move for the guy. In Melbourne with a strong club culture and fewer external distractions he could well blossom. No doubt a great player.

As for Bennell...it would be a mistake. Can anyone tell me where he has ever demonstrated good club discipline? Failed at Suns, failed at Dockers. Why clog the list with a bloke with no commitment? I thought we were over that nonsense as a club. Turn it up!
