Squadron 17 Flies Fleet to Arizona Camp Meeto

Post by Windy Hille »

Is has been reported that 17 players led by leaders are heading (or have already left) for the Arizona delta . McGrath, Langers were named but I don’t know the composition of the rest.

It was discussed on SEN but I only caught the end bits of the report. There was a pointed question on whether Jaket Stringer was amongst the group, seemingly singling him out for a lack of professionalism and dedication to absolute fitness.

It was mentioned that he may have had recent surgery thus excluding him from such a trip.

It seems this wasn’t driven by Brad Scott, although certain players took his warning of “better come back from the off season in good nick” as an order to start acting elite.

Anyone hear who the 17 are?

Oblique as it may be, the setting of this camp has been done before by a small group previously. What does it actually do and what benefits are gained from it? Again. One needs to question the lepsis of this idea.

10 years ago, this is what we built…
Essendon Chairman Paul Little said it was an exciting day for the club.

"Today is a historic day for the Essendon Football Club as we embark on a new era," Little said.

"The new High Performance Centre is a world class venue that will provide our players, coaches and staff with the best possible facilities every day they go to work."
World class venue.

We gotta fly to Arizona to get fit.

I just laugh at everything we do these days. Can never take them seriously.

Players known to be going... (and there may be more)
Langford, Baldwin, McGrath, Ridley, Merrett, Guelfi, Laverde, Hind, Gresham, Hobbs, Menzie, Tsatas and Caldwell.

It is "player driven".
Stringer is doing a rehab program at The Hangar.

In reality, the camp does nothing. Any gain from altitude training is lost within weeks.
So the best you can say is that it shows a commitment from them to try harder to be their best, and it may build some comaraderie in the group.
Seems like a waste of their own money to me - they could have stayed home and simply trained harder :-k

One Question. Where did they get the leaders from?

Sam Kerr and Elise Perry are otherwise occupied with other engagements.

Thanks for that nudder.

I get that some players have had some surgeries then would prevent them attending the camp in essence. Not sure of the availability and injury status of the following ;

Sammy Weideman
Darcy Parish
Jake Kello
Red Dog
Pedro Wright
Nik Cox
Dyls Shiel

Hope there isn’t sby disconnect here with some of these. Not sure about Shiel’s situations with the club knowing he wanted to be traded and wasn’t part of the Gresham deal . Sull of some sorts one suspects…

Shiel is also recovering from surgery. Not sure about the others.
Also, I didn't see anywhere that Shiel said he wanted to leave - only comments suggesting he could be part of a deal.

It will be interesting to see if all the attendee s to this camp have markedly improved seasons as a result (although it might be difficult for Kylos to have a markedly improved season on last season).

You would hope to see greater stamina, more physical intensity, and sharper cognition in their outputs.

Those that stayed home… what were their programs? One wonders.

Why might you expect greater performance from those that went to Arizona?
If the players that stayed in Aus trained just as hard, they'll be just as fit.

In essence, higher altitude training requires more ‘effort’ due to the slight reduction in oxygen and atmospheric pressure, meaning the body has to work harder to compensate or acclimatise to the conditions. It’s all scientific and clubs have been using it for years. Certain blood cells and muscle metabolism work harder - meaning greater benefits for the athlete (but I’m no sports scientist).

Those who stayed here would probably have to work 1.5 times harder (at a guess) than those in Arizona. Maybe twice as hard.

There is a belief that endurance, strength and conditioning is increased by training at high altitudes.
