Ooohhh the hype 12 months ago - we're getting Goldy.
He'll be great, and can mentor Draper & Bryan.

With hindsight, has it been a good choice or not?
He played a lot in the first half of the season, and reasonably well.
Played one game since the Bye - "managed".
Draper doesn't seem to be any smarter from the mentoring he's received, and Bryan has learnt nothing because Goldy is too special to play VFL alongside him. But meanwhile, Bryan has missed out on crucial AFL development.

Worth mentioning - Goldy hasn't played a VFL game yet this year but is named this week.
Will he get another AFL game??
Maybe Vs Swans - our last Home game.
But is Brad that guy that would "gift" a farewell game?? Given his "we are on a journey to get better" mantra?? (remember Brent Harvey???)
Time will tell.
And will be revealing.

Smart to recruit Goldy last year? Or a waste?

It started smart and wound up dumb.

Goldstein started like a house on fire and was then run into the ground. Probably after round 7 he was seriously flagging.

One of Scott's main failings is his loyalty to what and who he knows (just like it was with Weiderman last year). when this is combined with his reluctance to play youngsters, he kept on with Goldy when the guy was faring worse than the Black Knight with both legs off. He played consecutively games 1-11.

We were supposed to get 8-10 games out of Goldy. We wound up with 14 games, many of which he did 90% of the ruckwork. You can see the big dropoff in his stats towards the end of the 11 game stretch when he managed 34 hitouts against GWS in Round 9, 18 against North in Round 10, and 16 against Richmond in Round 11 ... all without Draper.

Scott's biggest failure was running Bryan for one game only, and only as the sole ruck. Bryan did OK for nearly three quarters and then dropped totally off... as would be expected from very young rucks. He should have been kept in after that as a forward/ruck or even as the sub to learn from Goldy and get time at AFL level. Rucks take a bit of time to develop .... look at the two Williams in last night's game against Cold Coast - they were booth jokes last year but suddenly they out perform Witts. Similar trajectories have been seen from Xerri, English and Meek.

Draper went sour during the Crows away game. And he has not been the same since he was injured. Yet Scott has endured with him.

2MP has been shit since he was rubbed out. He is scared to run anywhere near a contested ball anymore. He won't get his grove back until someone sorts his brain out. This will be less coaching or on-field playing and more a sports psychologist. Yet Scott has persisted with him.

So Goldy from me has been a 4/10 at best. A sugar-hit in the beginning, but long-term a big negative on the team's development.

With Flipper retiring and Draper injured, I guess they saw an opportunity to “plug the gap”.

That’s how I saw it.

But what they’ve done is hold back Bryan instead.

So... it was a not so smart decision...when we consider we are not in "the window" and developing the players for when we are in the window should be the priority.

Not too sure if anyone here said it, but it was very common on social media.
But they didn't really "plug the gap" did they? There wasn't really a gap to plug. Flip was always 2nd choice and Bryan could have been that 2nd choice instead, but like you said - they've held him back. So I'll take that as a "not smart" decision.

It has been the Essendon way over the past 20 years to massively overrate our list and where we were actually at.

The only time we came close to having a successful list was 2013 and 2014 but the supplements fiasco and the circus around it put paid to performance success and the aftermath of the bleeding of top players from the club and restrictions on recruiting quickly diminished the list.

Yet we simply have not been clear eyed and honest about the state of the list and draft and develop what we actually need.

At today's press conference at the Hangar, Brad Scott all but confirmed that Goldstein will play on in 2025.

Goldy will have a role next year - on-field, off-field or both.
